Did you know that the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs recommends the following chemicals be placed on hives regularly?:

• formic acid (not too bad - it is a naturally occurring chemical in the honey but it kills off a parasite called varroa mite.  It also disrupts the hive and almost kills the bees!
• oxalic acid: this is also added to kill of the varroa mites
• Fumagillin B - used to keep nosema bacteria at bay
• Apivar, Apistan, Checkmite: you need a pesticide license to use it in some American states. Apivar was temporarily allowed in 2012 and is a neurotoxin.
• Oxytet-25-s - an antibiotic (is this good for you to ingest more while doctors are stressing that we use antibiotics less?)

This cornucopia of chemicals is to keep them alive?  My bees live a very natural life - I do not control their destiny - they do.  If they are ill I do not apply chemicals to keep them alive. I let them pull out of it naturally or they die and that line of bees no longer reproduces.  This makes the bees in my apiary stronger.  I do not fault the larger suppliers of honey but why should you choose an inferior product that has added chemicals and reduced benefits?
